alligatoring is a defect that develops in paint systems or asphalt surfaces. alligatoring is caused by the loss of volatile oils, UV induced oxidation and surface fatigue due to repeated thermal expansion and contraction. alligatoring creates a pattern of finish cracks resembling an alligator skin.
